An obvious statement made exponentially more complex by a question.

Writers use words.

Research + Craftsmanship = Action

     This is what I do.

If this seems mechanical, it is. If it seems like it lacks creativity, it doesn't. There is a great deal of creativity involved.

We use them for a number of reasons: to inform, entertain, persuade, etcetera. Yet they are always used to communicate something for an intended purpose. Using the right words, in the right order, allows the reader to reach this purpose in the most efficient way.

No matter if it's a screenplay, a novel, an instruction manual, a magazine article, or an advertisement for the side of a bus, words are used for a specific purpose. And when the reader understands the purpose, they become engaged.

A writer's job—my job—is to understand the intended goal and use effective words to reach it.

But like great coffee, it involves a process.
